DWARAKA-THE LOST CITY OF LORD KRISHNA
The mystery of Dwaraka- a myth or reality?
Once upon a time, there was a numinous kingdom in the middle of the sea. This kingdom consisted of numerous palaces that were all made of gold. Legends surrounding this city are still a concept of fascination, no wonder, since this city was built by the enchanting lord Krishna.
The name Dwaraka, came by due to the many dwaras that were associated to the mainland by the use of bridges (dwaras imply gateways).
As written in the sacred scripture of Srimad Bhagvatam, the city of Dwaraka was built due to the constant attack on Mathura by the ruler of Magadha, Jarasandha. To prevent further attacks on his clan, Lord Krishna decided to have a separate city on the western coast of India. This idea was given life by the great architect Vishwakarma.
But alas, the city of Dwaraka sunk as the lord left for his heavenly abode. But, the awe and mysticism surrounding the city of Dwaraka never ceased. It grew in leaps and bounds, only to be unraveled by archaeologists. Archeologists found an underwater kingdom of the coast of Dwarka in Gujarat that is supposedly the original Dwaraka. Now that the dwelling place of lord Krishna has been discovered, the findings add to the belief that all that was written in our scriptures was no mere assumption. The ruins found corroborate to those written in our ancient Hindu texts.
Also, archeologists and oceanographic studies have hinted at the authenticity of the city of Dwaraka that has long been under question by non- believers. This also adds strength to the notion of the very existence of our epic – the Mahabharata and the existence of Lord Krishna as well.
Astounding, isn’t it?
